It contains 22 total, facet-cut gemstones. Each of the 17 sapphires measures 1.8 millimeters and each of the five diamonds weighs 0.01 carat. Velvety and medium deep in color saturation, the sapphires form four arms ending in trefoils. Diamonds are spaced evenly in the arms lending light contrast to the deep blue sapphires. The metal for the bale and shared prongs is 14k white gold. (The trefoil is a stylized shamrock composed of three joined circles, which represent eternity and signify God in three persons. St. Patrick used the trefoil to illustrate the doctrine of the Trinity). The widely used budded cross thus recalls the Trinity. In ancient Assyria a cross's corners represented the sunshine's directions. In Hinduism, the vertical arm represents higher, celestial states of being while the horizontal arm represents lower, earthly states. Like the gemstones in this cross, sapphire's deep satiated blue shade is linked to emotions of sympathy and harmony. That the gemstone also symbolizes loyalty and faithfulness makes this sapphire cross pendant especially appealing.
