Are all the Sonicare toothbrush models basically the same as far as the technology and handles go, with the difference between them being the added accessaries?

Yep. a more expensive sonicare isn't going to clean, remove plaque, etc. any better than the cheaper ones. the elite models (and higher) do have a more ergonomic feel to them compared to the essence and advanced (which i used to own). other than that you're just paying for fancy bells and whistles. i'm happy with my elite sonicare that i got from costco.
