Almost all devices can play mp3s so you don't have to deal with music with DRM at all if you don't want to. I use an ipod and 90% of my music is from CDs I've ripped and the other 10% I buy from iTunes (for ease). The files I've ripped can be played on any device and moved to many machine I want. To rip my CDs I like the free program Max http://www.sbooth.org on the Mac and the program EAC on windows http://www.exactaudiocopy.de (also free)

My votes goes to the Creative zen (cuz i hate ipods). Either way it really depends on your budget.
