PocketMail makes an email only device. You just call an phone number and literally hold this device up to the phone to get your email. It's kind of like the old school modems from War Games where you have to cradle the phone in the modem. That said, it's going to be really limiting. Even for computer illiterate people, I think you can teach them to use webmail. I think they might get frustrated when people send them photos they can't view, or links to websites, etc. Maybe get them a used iBook or something?
